Unfortunately, saying thank you seems to be an after thought more and more. So at least once a month, I will take a few minutes to publicly appreciate someone that has had an impact on me.
I met Bernie and Laura independently over the last few years within the Agile community. Last year at Agile 2016, I was chatting with them about CST process and Agile2017. I made a joke about “watch me fall when I walk up on to the stage in front of ~2500 people”. Bernie calmly looked back at me and asked “would wearing a tiara help?” I immediately laughed with an “OF COURSE! But it would have to be combined with a superhero cape. As that’s how I roll.” Bernie looked over at Laura, exchanged a grin and said “Consider it done”.
Boy, did they deliver! They didn’t forget. When they found me before the conference opening, I was grinning from ear to ear. I proudly walked onto that stage with my tiara and cape…and I didn’t FALL!
Here’s the thing…some people in the audience probably thought it was stupid. However, I felt supported. I felt powerful. I felt safe. And that was the reason Bernie and Laura went above and beyond to provide that environment for me.
So thank you Bernie and Laura for being people that really make a difference in our community.
