Exercise: Video Lessons

One of my primary speaking sessions lately is centered around helping people start learning through experiencing and not being told.  I’ve enjoyed this session and the results so much that I’m going to do a series of posts that highlight an exercise and how you might leverage it.  Plus, this will force me to retire this session by the end of 2018 (always challenging myself too!).

Facilitator Exercise Instructions (note: obviously feel free to put this into your own words):

  • Play video (note: you can exchange this video for any video that helps highlight key lessons)


  • Ask a variety of questions (in large shout-out format or as table discussions).  For this particular video, I ask the following question at the start of my “why Agile” module in my trainings:
    1. Did he work really hard?  … expecting yes answer
    2. Did he have good intentions?  … expecting yes answer
    3. Did he get results?  The usual answer here is no…well maybe for the neighbor.
  • Then highlight your key point. In this case, I express that I’m tired of meeting people that are working really hard, have amazing intentions but at the end of the day say things like “I’m Tricia Broderick and I’ve written code that met requirements was on time and under budget but never used.”

The amazing part of doing this exercise with a discussion afterwards rarely leads me to making to much of the  key point all by myself.  They do!  The additional aspect of this delivery is that it connects learners with the concept and an image, which helps with retention.  I then can reference back to the video throughout the course.
